Women's Basketball Looks to Sustain Success in 2017-18

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team will seek to continue the program's recent history of success when they begin play on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Houghton College. Despite the loss of five starting seniors from last year's roster, head coach Scott Hemer is optimistic about the team's chances to contend for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title, and potentially make another NCAA Tournament appearance.

RETURNERS
The Knights will look to junior forward McKenna Brooks as the top returning scorer from last season. Brooks averaged 9.0 points per game while grabbing 6.2 rebounds per game and led the team with 1.8 steals per game as well. Junior guard Kelsey Poplawski, junior forward Nicole Kazmarczyk and sophomore guard Sara Ciotti saw roles off the bench last season and will look to compete for starting roles. Senior guard Sam Barry, junior forwards Alyssa Lesakowski and Andrea Bedard, as well as sophomore guards Natalie DiSalvo and Madison McCulley return for the Knights as well, adding depth and experience to the team.

NEWCOMERS
Geneseo added five new players to the roster for the 2017-18 campaign, bringing first-year guards Lindsay Halpin, Natalie Alfieri and Allyson Strauss on board along with first-year forwards Emily Lavarnway and Kerrin Montgomery. The five newcomers have received high praise from Coach Hemer entering the season and will look to make an early impact on the court.

SCHEDULE
The Knights open the campaign at Houghton on Wednesday, November 15 and then travel to Grantham, Pa. to face host Messiah and Waynesburg in the Hampton Tip-off Classic. Geneseo opens its conference schedule by traveling to Oneonta on Friday, Dec. 2 and then defending SUNYAC champions New Paltz on Saturday, Dec. 3. Geneseo hosts Potsdam (Dec. 8), Plattsburgh (Dec. 9) and Medaille (Dec. 30) to finish the year and opens 2018 with a trip to Brockport on January 5. The Knights will play five of their eight final conference games at home before ending the season with a trip to Cortland (Feb. 16) and Oswego (Feb. 17). The SUNYAC Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 20 with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24.
