GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Isaac Garcia-Cassani was named the Division III Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), announced Monday. It is the second second time he has won the award this season and fourth time of his career.
Garcia-Cassani finished first out of 354 runners to lead No. 2 Geneseo to second place out of 38 teams at the Cowbell Classic, hosted by Principia (Ill.), Saturday. The field included 18 teams ranked in the top-30 of the most recent national polls, including six of the top-10 squads.
Garcia-Cassani made up an eight-second deficit on the leaders over the last 1,000 meters to cover the 8-kilometer course with a winning time of 24:41.02, edging runner-up Dhruvil Patel from North Central by .95 of a second.
Geneseo only trailed top-ranked North Central (Ill.) in the team standings on the course that will be the site of the NCAA Division III Championships next month.
Garcia-Cassani and the Knights will next compete at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28, hosted by Potsdam.
