GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo men's track & field team kicks off the 2017-18 campaign at the Brockport Early Season Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Fourth-year head coach Chris Popovici welcomes back a strong group of returners that will look to defend their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Championship while challenging for the outdoor title after a runner-up finish last spring.
Senior Isaac Garcia-Cassani is back after a junior campaign that saw him win a national championship in the mile at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships and another in the 1,500 at the outdoor championships. His indoor season also saw him anchor the runner-up distance medley team as current juniors Luke Holtzman, Zachary Hannahoe and Gillan Faulkner all return in search of a national title this winter.
Garcia-Cassani joins a solid returning distance running crew for Popovici. Senior Alfredo Mazzuca is back after winning the 5,000 (15:11.77) last winter while sophomore Jack Tate looks to defend his 10,000 (32:00.72) championship from the spring. Faulkner should also be in contention in the 800 after runner-up finishes at the SUNYAC indoor (1:56.87) and outdoor (1:55.14) meets.
In the sprints, junior Amman Weaver looks to build on a runner-up finish in the 60-meter dash (7.01) at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships along with a fifth-place outcome in the 100 (11.46) outdoors, while classmate Austin Cutler placed fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.51) and the 110 hurdles (15.65), respectively.
Senior Chris Walter leads the field event returners after a second-place showing in the indoor long jump (6.97m/22'10.5"), while sophomore Jacob Converse looks to improve on third-place efforts in both the outdoor decathlon (6,039 pts) as well as the indoor heptathlon (4,478).
The 2017-18 winter schedule will be highlighted by the SUNYAC Championships on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 23-24 at Brockport leading up to the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by Birmingham Southern at the Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala. (March 9-10). Geneseo is scheduled to kick off the outdoor season by hosting the Geneseo Invitational (March 31) while also welcoming the rest of the league to campus for the 2018 SUNYAC Outdoor Championships (May 4-5). The NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships will be hosted by Wisconsin-La Crosse (May 24-26).
