GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior Alexa Wandy was named the Atlantic Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year and junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year as 17 members of the SUNY Geneseo track & field program were honored with 25 All-Atlantic Region honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Head Coach Chris Popovici was recognized as the Women's Coach of the Year while Dan Moore was named the Assistant Coach of the Year as well.
Wandy was recognized after finishing first nationally in the triple jump and second in the long jump as well as on the Knight's nationally-ranked 4x100 and 4x400 relays. She was one of only 16 women from across the country to be named all-region in four events.
Garcia-Cassani landed was honored after posting the nation's top 1,500 time while alsojoining senior teammate Alex Kramer in gaining all-region recognition in the 5,000.
Senior Mackenzie Ross entered the week ranked third nationally in the 800 while junior Lauren Bamford was eighth in the 400 hurdles. The duo also earned all-region honors in the 4x400 along with Wandy and sophomore Erin MacDougall.
Junior Camille Wutz gained all-region recognition after logging the nation's top mark in the long jump while also gaining the honor in the 100. Senior Marissa Cossaro landed two all-region selections in the 1,500 and the 5,00o while senior Sara Rosenzweig (steeplechase) and first-year Sarah Bronk (pole vault) were also recognized.
Popovici and Moore were recognized after leading the Geneseo women to their second State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship in three years. The Knights also enter this week's national championships ranked No. 2 in the country.
A total of 935 men and 945 women nabbed All-Region honors for their efforts during the spring. The top-five individuals in each event from each of the eight regions around the country as well the region's top-three relay teams earned All-Region distinction.
Geneseo is set to compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Thursday-Saturday (May 25-27), hosted by Mount Union at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
