GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Alexa Wandy and junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani were named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Outstanding Performers of the Meet at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, announced Thursday.
Honored as the Outstanding Female field Athlete of the Meet, Wandy won a pair of national championships in the triple jump and the long jump. In last Saturday's triple jump competition, Wandy posted five of the six longest performances on the day, including a championship meet record 41-5 3/4 (12.64m) on her final jump that was nearly a foot better than runner-up Amber Williams from Wisconsin-Platteville. Wandy won the long jump with a career-best mark of 19 feet, 6 1/4 inches (5.95m) on her sixth and final jump, besting runner-up Asia Greene (19-5 1/4 - 5.92) from George Fox by an inch.
Named the Outstanding Male Track Athlete of the Meet, Garcia-Cassani was crowned national champion in last Saturday's mile competition after best the field with a 4:07.77 clocking. It was his second All-America honor of the week after also anchoring the Knights' distance medley relay team to second place on Friday night, joining sophomores Luke Holtzman, Zachary Hannahoe and Gillan Faulkner to post a time of 9:59.64.
Each year the USTFCCCA honors the Outstanding Performers of the Meet at the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Winners are determined using a formula that takes into account team points scored, plus meet records (five additional points), Division III season bests based on the converted qualifying lists (three points) and facility records (one point). Relay points, if applicable, are split equally between the four team members.
