OSWEGO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior attacker Alex Leuze scored three goals, including the game-winner with 1:29 left in overtime, to lead the Knights to an 8-7 victory at Oswego in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener.
Senior attacker Michael Engstrom added a pair of goals while senior attackers Dane Bentley and Tim Wright each scored once and junior attacker Joshua Merkel added a goal and tallied an assist. Sophomore defender Jack Crowley recorded a team-high three caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls while senior midfielder Drew Madarasz and junior defender Ryan Cates each picked up a team-high five ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Michael Yehl made 11 saves, including a game-saving stop in overtime.
The Knights (7-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) held a 7-5 fourth-quarter lead but allowed Oswego (3-7, 0-2 SUNYAC) a pair of goals in the final 7:00 to force overtime. In the extra period, Geneseo lost the opening faceoff, but Yehl made a clutch save and Crowley came away with a caused turnover and ground ball to give the Knights the final possession. After a Geneseo timeout, Leuze broke away from a defender and beat the Oswego goalkeeper for the deciding tally.
Geneseo will return to action on Wednesday, April 12 when the team plays host to defending conference champions Cortland. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
