No. 2 Men's Ice Hockey Suffers First Setback At Buffalo State, 4-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forwards David Szmyd and Andrew Romano each tallied goals but the Knights took their first loss of the season, falling, 4-2, to host Buffalo State on Friday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

  • Buffalo State scored the first goal of the game on an odd-man break just 1:27 into the contest, but Szmyd responded under two minutes later with the tying goal on assists from junior forward Dan Bosio and senior defenseman Teddy McCabe to level the score, 1-1.
  • In the second period, Geneseo outshot Buffalo State, 12-10, but the Bengals tallied two goals while holding the Knights scoreless to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.
  • Romano netted a power play goal, his fourth tally of the season, to cut the deficit to one goal midway through the period, but it wasn't enough as the Bengals scored an empty-net goal in the final seconds to put the game out of reach.

  • The Knights had not lost to Buffalo State in the six previous meetings, going 3-0-3 since their last defeat to the Bengals on Dec. 3, 2016.
  • Szmyd extended his goal-scoring streak to three games. He has tallied five points in the Knights' last three outings.
  • Geneseo scored its 19th power play goal of the season, the most power play goals in the country, posting a 1-for-7 mark on the man-advantage.

Geneseo (5-1-1, 3-1-1 SUNYAC) will return home to host Fredonia on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
