Balanced Offense Leads No. 2 Men's Ice Hockey Past Cortland, 7-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Andrew Romano was one of seven Knights to tally a goal and passed off two assists to lead the Knights past State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Cortland, 7-1, on Friday night at Alumni Arena.


  • Geneseo took the lead when senior forward Andrew Romano scored his third of the season just under eight minutes into the game. Just 30 seconds later, junior forward Devin Brink added a goal to make it 2-0 Geneseo.
  • Senior forward Conlan Keenan and junior forward Dan Bosio each scored before the end of the first period as the Knights took a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • Cortland scored its lone tally of the game with 7:47 to play in the second period, but senior forward Tyson Empey responded with a goal to maintain the Knights' four-goal cushion.
  • Junior forward Carson Kelley and senior forward David Szmyd each scored in the third period as Geneseo closed out Cortland for the 7-1 victory.


  • The Knights outshot the Red Dragons, 52-17, while first-year goaltender Matt Petizian made 16 saves to earn his second goaltending win of the season. 
  • Geneseo was held without a power play goal for the first time this season. The Knights entered the game with 11 power play goals, including a season-high five against SUNY Canton, but were held to an 0-for-4 mark on the man advantage. 
  • After scoring just eight goals in their first three games combined, Geneseo has tallied 17 goals in its last two contests. The Knights rank sixth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 5.00 goals per game. 
  • Romano extended his NCAA Division III points lead, earning three points on the night to bring his season total to 13 on three goals and an NCAA Division III best 10 assists.


No. 2 Geneseo (4-0-1, 2-0-1 SUNYAC) will host No. 3 Oswego on Saturday night at Ira S. Wilson Arena.
