GENESEO, N.Y. - Four SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were named PrestoSports Athletes of the Week by the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Tuesday. Women's tennis senior Sam Montague was named Singles Player of the Week and teamed with junior Dana Sorrentino to earn Doubles Team of the Week while men's cross country junior Matt Sayre was named Runner of the Week and field hockey senior Julia Kim earned Defensive Player of the Week.
Montague posted a 2-0 mark in singles play, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles against Brockport as the Knights rolled to an 8-1 win. She went on to defeat Fredonia's previously unbeaten second singles, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, to help the Knights to a 7-2 win over the Blue Devils. In doubles play, Montague teamed with Sorrentino to go 2-0 at first doubles. In dual matches this season, Montague is 4-0 at second singles while she and Sorrentino are 5-0 at first doubles.
Sayre was the top Division III finisher at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational, Saturday, at Roberts Wesleyan. Covering the eight-kilometer course fifth with a time of 25:54.4, he led the Knights to a second-place finish out of 21 Division I, II, III and junior college teams in the field.
Kim anchored a Geneseo defense which only allowed one goal in a pair of victories last week. The Knights held host Nazareth to seven shots in a 3-1 win on Wednesday before limiting visiting Ithaca to four shots in a 1-0 shutout on Saturday. Kim also scored the lone goal in the win over the Bombers, finishing a penalty corner in the 24th minute to push Geneseo to its fifth victory in six outings.
