Geneseo Ends Up 13th In Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings For Highest Finish Ever

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo finished 13th in the 2016-17 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, which measure the overall excellence of the nearly 450 Division III athletic programs in the nation. 

The Knights scored 655.5 points, which is the program's highest total in the 22-year history of the rankings. It was also the fifth-consecutive season Geneseo moved up in both final ranking and point total compared to the previous season. 

Geneseo finished second in New York, only trailing 10th-place Ithaca (716), while finishing ahead of 21st-place Cortland (530.25), 36th-place St. John Fisher (416.50) and 40th-place NYU (403) to round out the top-five institutions from the Empire State. 

Geneseo was led by 11 teams that either qualified for their respective NCAA Tournament, or scored points in an NCAA Championship event. The men's cross country team led the way with a national runner-up showing in the fall, while the women's cross country team finished third.

The women's track & field team tied for fifth at the outdoor championships to follow-up an eighth-place finish during the indoor season led by three-time national champion and five-time All-American Alexa Wandy. The men's track & field team tied for 10th during the indoor campaign while tying for 27th outdoors, pushed by a pair of national titles by junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani

The women's basketball team advanced to the "Sweet 16" for the second time in three seasons to notch a tie for ninth place, while the field hockey and women's tennis teams each contributed ties for 17th place after winning their respective SUNYAC Championships and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The men's and women's swimming & diving teams tied for 23rd and 40th, respectively.

Williams (Mass) won its fifth-straight and 20th overall title with 1,335.25 points, followed by Washington (Mo.) (1,227), Tufts (926.75), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (895) and Johns Hopkins (864.50) in the top-five of 324 scoring institutions on the list.
